How many Test Centres are there?

There are over 40 Driver Theory Test locations in Ireland. You can choose a Test Centre that is most convenient to you. Please note that available appointment times may vary between Test Centres.

View Test Centres. You will be able to select your test centre and view its current appointment times at the online booking service.

How much will my test cost?

Can I reschedule or cancel my test?

Yes, you can reschedule or cancel your booking providing the request is made no later than 5 business days (to include 3 complete business days) prior to your test date. For example, to reschedule or cancel a test booked for a Friday you must inform us on the previous Monday or for a test booked for a Saturday you must inform us on the previous Monday.

What happens if I miss my test appointment?

If you fail to arrive at the Test Centre in time for your test appointment, or cancel your test in less than 5 business days (to include 3 complete business days) prior to your test date, you will lose your test fee.

Who operates the Driver Theory Test service?

The Official Driver Theory Test service is operated by Prometric Ireland Ltd. on behalf of the Road Safety Authority.

What do I do if I wish to add another category to my current driving licence?

You are required to pass a Driver Theory Test if it is your first learner permit / provisional licence in a specific category. You must submit your application to the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) centres and provide the Driver Theory Test certificate in respect of the category you are applying for.

Is there test revision material that I can purchase and where can I get it?

Categories A & B

The Official Driver Theory Test Questions and Answers, Motorcycles, Cars and Work Vehicles – 7th Edition, December 2016 should be studied for Driver Theory Test for categories A (Motorcycle/Moped) or B (Car/Tractor & Work Vehicles).

Categories C & D

The Official Driver Theory Test Questions and Answers, Truck and Bus (including Step 1 and Step 2 of Driver CPC) – 6th Edition, October 2013 should be studied for Driver Theory Test categories C (Truck), D (Bus) or CD (Bus and Truck).

In addition to the above, C, D and CD candidates can also study the RSA Rules of the Road Book and related manuals, such as The Official DSA Guide to Driving Buses / Coaches and Heavy Goods Vehicles.

Bus & Truck Module Test Candidates

The Official Driver Theory Test Questions and Answers, Truck and Bus (including Step 1 and Step 2 of Driver CPC) – 6th Edition, October 2013: for Driver Theory Tests categories C (Truck), D (Bus) and CD (Bus and Truck). This book contains information specific to both the Bus & Truck Module Tests, and will assist candidates in successfully completing a modular theory test in either Category C or D.
